Environment, Energy & Safety

In the manufacturing of our products, we inevitably use energy and generate waste and emissions. However, in line with the policies of the Teijin Group, we are working hard to:

  • Save energy
  • Use our resources effectively
  • Minimize our emissions of chemical substances into the environment
  • Manage and reduce waste materials
  • Prevent soil and underground water pollution
  • Conserve biodiversity

We also want to be transparent about our own impact on the environment. We therefore produce an annual HSE report, which is available online. This report reflects our targets and achievements of the previous year in the field.

BRZO Inspections

Our production sites in Emmen and Delfzijl are subject to the Directive on risks and severe accidents (BRZO) because of the hazardous substances we use and store. Delfzijl has a special position because it is a complex chemical production facility that works with many hazardous substances – such as aniline, chlorine, para-xylene, hydrogen, and solvents. There are safety & environmental risks associated with the handling/processing of these substances, both for the plant and the surroundings. Delfzijl therefore is indicated in the heavy category of BRZO companies. This site must prepare a safety report containing scenarios for managing risks.

At the production site in Emmen – which is not so much a chemical operation as a complex yarn spinning facility – fuming sulfuric acid is the only compound that presents a risk to the surroundings. Emmen therefore falls into the lighter category of BRZO companies. The emphasis is on health and safety, such as exposure to (fuming) sulfuric acid, working safely with the machinery, and avoiding contact with rotating or moving components.

Representatives of government (the province, the Labor Inspectorate, and the regional fire department) visit both locations each year to carry out a corresponding BRZO inspection. Of every inspection, a public summary is written (only in Dutch). If you are interested – more information can be found on the Dutch website: https://brzoplus.nl/inspecties/
