Our business activities will increasingly be influenced by legislation and regulations designed to combat climate change. This legislation will include a range of initiatives, such as the financial tax on CO2 emissions. But we want to go beyond the legislation – and our goal is therefore to get the lowest eco-footprint in our competitive field. To achieve that goal, the first thing we must do is carefully considering our carbon footprint.
Comprehensive carbon accounting
In 2010, we began measuring the eco-footprint of our production process and value chain for the different types of Twaron. These measurements are based on a calculation model developed by the University of Manchester in the UK and on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. With exception of CO2 emissions generated by employee transport, our figures take into account all of the emissions in the complete value chain – expressed as CO2 equivalents. The figure for our carbon footprint is determined for each of the different production processes for fibers, yarn and pulp, and then recalculated to reflect the average carbon footprint of producing 1 ton of Twaron.
The 2010 figures
The carbon footprint for 2010 is 20.4 tons of CO2 per ton of Twaron produced. We will use this as our reference point for setting out our future ambitions. For example, recycling will help to decrease the carbon footprint in different parts of the value chain.
