Twaron tape

Teijin Aramid has developed a new type of Twaron: Twaron tape D2800 – a slim, strong ribbon of aramid fiber. Twaron tape is a patented solution, consisting of a single, spread aramid yarn, which is impregnated and fixed with a matrix material. Typical tape width is 2.9mm. The tape thickness is 100 μm, and it is supplied on flange bobbins at 25km lengths. Twaron tape’s mechanical properties are equal to those of base high-modulus aramid yarn.

Today’s optical fiber cables are getting smaller and smaller – making it more difficult to protect their core. One of the major advantages of Twaron tape is that it provides better coverage for optical cores – even at smaller core diameters. The tape is evenly wrapped around the core to provide complete coverage and optimal force and crush resistance. In fact, Twaron tape provides three to five times better crush resistance than ordinary aramid fiber protection. What’s more, Twaron tape enables the production of cables down to a diameter of 1.2mm. This has important implications for the installed hardware: the production of thinner cables translates into significant savings in space, and an increased capacity for optical distribution frames of 30-50% (compared with 1.6mm cable). At the same time, the thinner cables demand less cooling power, thereby cutting costs – and emissions – at distribution centers.

Key benefits of Twaron tape:
• No need to apply low linear density yarns
• High strength and crush efficiency
• Cost-effective
• Easy handling
• Suitable for 1.2mm cables
• Enables faster cable production
