Ropes and cables

Today’s ropes and cables are used in very challenging conditions, and the drive toward tougher, more resistant and durable products is rapidly increasing. In the mining and offshore industries, for example, ropes and cables need to last longer, lift heavier weights and reach greater depths. As a result, there is also a huge demand for greater efficiencies and enabling technologies, which puts even more pressure on the parties involved in the rope and cable industry.

Standing up to tough conditions

Our para-aramids Twaron and Technora have a proven track record of helping to meet these demands. Combining a range of essential properties, Twaron and Technora have played an important role in high-performance ropes and cables for more than three decades. These unique properties give them a number of significant advantages over other synthetic yarns and steel in ropes and cables.

The key benefits of using our aramid:

  • Long lifespan
  • Low weight
  • High efficiency
  • Low maintenance
  • Good heat stability
  • Long-term dimensional stability

The main advantages of aramid over other synthetic yarns:

  • Very high tenacity
  • High modulus of elasticity
  • Low creep
  • Resistance to high temperatures
  • Good fatigue resistance
  • Chemical resistance

The main advantages of aramid over steel:

  • Low specific weight
  • High energy absorption
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Good dielectric behavior
  • Non-magnetic
  • Good fatigue resistance
  • Product range

We offer a wide range of Twaron products which have all proven their value throughout the rope and cable industry. Additionally, our Technora products are used to meet some of the industry’s highly specific needs and complete our aramid product portfolio. Our dedicated experts will be happy to advise you on the best product for your specific application.

Main applications

Our products are mostly used to reinforce ropes and cables wherever safety and protection are essential, for example, in mining, offshore, and leisure industries. At Teijin Aramid, we are uniquely able to provide para-aramids suitable for both static and dynamic applications, and both Twaron and Technora offer distinct advantages in a wide range of applications, including:

  • Seismic/geophysical cables
  • Antenna cables
  • Vessel mooring lines
  • Fishing lines
  • Lifting slings
  • Emergency ropes for firefighters
  • Para-gliding ropes

Continuous development

The advantages of using Twaron and Technora can be optimized through the application of a range of surface treatments. For example, we have developed a marine finish that protects ropes or cables during long-term use in wet conditions. This finish will significantly increase the fatigue life and abrasion resistance of your rope and cable applications. We have also developed a waterblocking treatment which eliminates the need for additional protection covers to prevent water ingress. Besides optimizing our products by adding surface treatments, we are also heavily involved in creating additional value and customer benefits by moving with our products in new rope applications. Our dedication to high performance materials is again shown by the recent development of UHMwPE tape Endumax®. A combination of creativity and technical excellence is required, and most of these projects are done in co-development with other market parties.

We believe that the best solutions are ‘co-creations’ – in other words, they are based on shared know-how and technical expertise in products, production processes and market requirements. Whatever the properties you may be looking for – high strength, low weight, high dimensional stability, resistance to corrosion, heat, chemicals and seawater – together we can create the sustainable innovations you need. Sustainability is a theme where our company is heavily involved in. To a certain extent, sustainability is key for aramid solutions in the ropes and cables industry: our durable products offer efficiency improvement and as a result energy and maintenance reduction. Waste aramid can often be reclaimed and recycled for other applications.
