Arnhem, January 17, 2012 – When many people around the world were enjoying holidays, people from BigLift, Huisman and FibreMax successfully installed and load tested the 17 m super fly jib on BigLift Shipping’s ‘Happy Buccaneer’. The super fly jib increases the lifting height and outreach of the crane by 50% to respectively 59 m above deck and 55 m radius.
For upcoming projects BigLift Shipping purchased this 17m long fly jib to increase outreach and lifting height. With the fly jib mounted on the Happy Buccaneer, the crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 350 mt up to 35 m outreach and 250 mt at a 50 m outreach. To reduce installation time of the fly jib, lightweight stay cables from FibreMax are being used, produced with Twaron fibres.
It is the first time ever that aramid is used in a Lloyd’s certified offshore heavy lift crane application. The Twaron stay cables have a rated minimum breaking strength of 9000 kN (920mT). Because of the light weight and flexibility, the installation time of the fly jib is significantly reduced. The stay cables are maintenance free and can be man-handled during installation and storage. The fly jib, including the Twaron stay cables, complies to the requirements of Lloyd’s Register as specified in the Lloyd’s ‘Code of Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment’.
Twaron is a fiber of the future being an alternative for traditional materials. The fiber has unique properties which enable sustainable, ground breaking innovations and applications such as crane stay cables. Twaron is both extremely strong as extremely light-weight. Weight for weight Twaron is at least 5 times stronger than steel, which enables unique constructions. Twaron is safe. Although it is a synthetic fiber, it does not melt in extreme heat or fire. Moreover, the fiber remains stable under varying weather conditions; it maintains both its shape and its strength. A number of these properties makes products made with Twaron, easy to maintain and extremely durable.
